Who We Are

Dreamt up in the long and solitary months of lockdown that will likely come to define the year 2020, Sonder is not simply a café, but rather a concept. A place birthed out of the need for human connection, in a time of unparalleled separation. Sonder is a neologism, an ethereal word that means to realise the innate complexity of each passer-by, to recognize the depth of a stranger’s story, their late night hopes and childhood dreams, their fantasies and surreptitious desires, their inherent joys and deep-seated sorrows. It is to humanize the other, to see the profound sameness in those we do not know, and may never see again.


In a time of global isolation and increased fear of the other due to the pandemic and the growing apartness of our society, sonder café symbolises togetherness. It is a place of reflection, of connection, of introspection, of recognition of the other. A place where everyone belongs, where creativity is not stifled but encouraged, where differences are celebrated. A cosy world of good coffee, books and music, of nature and play, of happiness and life. Where all are welcome.


New York style toasted sandwiches and bagels are our speciality.

We use freshly baked artisanal sourdough and delicious boiled bagels from Proof and Dolce Bakery. Our coffee is a 100 % Arabica, fair trade Ethiopian and Burundi blend sourced from Bean There

Venue Hire

Did you know that we are not only a cafe but also a venue for hire?

That's right, Sonder Cafe also doubles as an event space. We are available to hire for any and all events from baby showers, birthday parties, supper clubs, brand launches, Xmas parties, and more.


Our rates are R5500 for full hire including a fully-stocked cash bar and 2 employees  to help assist with your event. We also offer catering at an additional rate.

If you wish to hire the space out excluding the bar our rates are R7000 all inclusive.


Venue hire is available from 4pm on weekdays and 2pm onwards on Saturdays or for the entire day on a Sunday. If you wish to hire outside of these times, let us know as exceptions can always be made.


We can comfortably seat 20-25 people and our capacity without seating maxes out at around 30/35.
